| Dennis Sims learned the art of scrimshaw in 1976 from an Alaskan Native, and is now one of Alaska's finest masters of the hand-done art. Scrimshaw is the art of etching a picture into ivory or bone. Dennis consistently places 1st in the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous Art competition. Dennis scrimshaws on old fossil walrus ivory. The ivory is over 600 years old and comes from the St. Lawrence Island. Its color comes from the minerals in the ground when aging. We hope you enjoy this piece of tradition brought home from Alaska! |
